Assignments are procured via an agency. Agencies are established organizations and are regulated by labor laws. Many agencies offer fringe benefits to their employees such as medical plans, and retirement funds. Agencies looking out for the best in the business are harder to qualify for, but can assign the very best hospitals in the country to a deserving travel nurse.

The assignment

Assignments last between eight to twenty six weeks, and can be anywhere in the country. As an employee a travel nurse had rights, and has the right to accept or reject an application which the agency will send on his or her behalf to the hospital. Once the application is approved by the hospital the paperwork is taken care of by the agency, and the necessary permits and licenses as required are taken care of. Once the assignment starts the travel nurse will receive fully furnished accommodation, or compensation for accommodation. Travel expenses, or mileage re-imbursements are also borne by most agencies.
